I wish I had had this book years ago when we first began our journey to persuade governments of the tragic consequences of neglecting girls’ and women’s maternal and reproductive health. Hundreds of thousands of girls and women were dying each year, and most of their deaths were preventable. Twenty times that number were severely injured. These are appalling statistics! Change is finally happening, but more and faster change is necessary.

Through his powerful and absolutely spectacular photographs, Mark is able to capture what words alone cannot do. There have been so many times when we’ve spoken with people who have no idea of the reality of the lives of girls and women in different regions of the world. They could not see their faces and did not know their stories. Today we have the pictures and we have the facts. Tremendous progress is being made, but as Mark notes in his narrative, the work is far from done.
